Massport to Host Fellowship for the Eleventh Consecutive Year
Boston, MA – Metro Housing|Boston has announced that Hazel O’Neill of Massachusetts Institute of Technology has been selected as the 2023 recipient of the Lowell L. Richards, III Fellowship for Leadership and Public Service.
Hazel will complete her fellowship this summer with the Massachusetts Port Authority’s (Massport) Real Estate and Asset Management Department, where Lowell Richards was Chief Development Officer for more than ten years. The announcement comes on March 15, Lowell Richard’s birthday.
“This is the eleventh year of the fellowship, and I am deeply grateful to the people at Metro Housing and Massport who kindly give their time to make this happen. We have continuously attracted exceptional and competitive candidates and this year is no different,” said Karen Richards, Lowell’s wife. “Hazel possesses an extensive background in public policy and has a strong passion for urban planning and development. Lowell would be proud to have her represent him with this Fellowship. What we knew and loved about Lowell inspired this decision.”
“Over the last several years, we have had exceptional individuals work alongside us as Lowell Richards Fellows in the Real Estate & Asset Management Department,” said Andrew Hargens, Chief Development Officer at Massport. “Hazel has outstanding credentials, and we look forward to having her join the team for the summer.”
Hazel is currently a Master of City Planning Candidate at MIT and expects to graduate in May 2024. She previously graduated from University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Arts in American Studies and a Bachelor of Science in Radio-Television-Film. Hazel currently serves as a Graduate Research Assistant, and Teaching Assistant at P-REX Lab, MIT. She previously worked as Assistant Planner at Dyett & Bhatia Urban and Regional Planners in Oakland, California.
“Economic development is an opportunity to fundamentally change the trajectory of a neighborhood—for good or ill,” says Hazel. “Equitable change for the better is obviously the goal. I am excited for the opportunities that the Lowell L. Richards, III Fellowship will provide me and am looking forward to learning more about the role of economic development in neighborhood growth.”
