WALTHAM, MA — A member of the Waltham Trailrunners, a local running group, will participate in the Boston Marathon on Oct. 11 to raise money for Metro Housing Boston, an organization dedicated to alleviating and preventing homelessness.
Rob Thompson initially signed up to run the virtual Boston Marathon, but was approached by a friend who works at Metro Housing Boston about running in-person to raise money for the organization. He said he decided to “take the plunge” and started fundraising several months ago.
“At the beginning of 2020 I had only run 600 miles in life and I emphatically stated I would never run a 10K much less a marathon,” said Thompson in an email. “Then the pandemic hit and I started running and ran 1300 miles last year and earlier this year started thinking about a marathon and initially signed up to run the virtual Boston Marathon.”
“I have been raising money and training for the past 16 weeks and here I am 2 weeks away from my 1st marathon ever – at 60 years old!” he continued.
Thompson said the Waltham Trailrunners have been “an amazing support system” and several other members will be running the marathon. A full list of Waltham residents running the marathon is available here.
